Copyright laws prevent people from using the creator's personal work. It is a type of protection that governs how content of any type can be used. This protection is available to published and unpublished works.

When does copyright protection start?

I have always thought that copyright work doesn't start until it has been registered through the government however this is not the case. Copyright protection starts when the work has been created in some kind of fixed form.

Who can claim ownership of material?

The answer to this question may seem obvious to some but to others it is important to note that the copyright material solely belongs to the author of the material. In the event that some material was created for work during work hours, the copyright material belongs to that business and not the employee who created the work. Also, co-authors to some material have a co-ownership. The only time that this worldn't be the case is if they make some different arangements to the works.

What is not copyrighted?

I thought this was a very good question and never thought of certain works not being able to be copyrighted. There are several categories that aren't allowed to be copyrighted. One of the things that can't be copyrighted is works that is not in some kind of tangible form such as thoughts or ideas. Improvisational speeches or perfomrances that have not been written or recorded cannot be copyrighted.

Another thing that can't be copyrighted are titles, names, short phrases, and slogans. Even familiar symbols or designs cannot be copyrighted.

Items such as ideas, procedures, methods, systems, processes, concepts, principles, discoveries, or devices cannot be copyrighted as well.

Even information that is considered common property and has no authorship such as calendars, heights and weight charts, tape measure, and lists and tables taken from public documents.

Government documents cannot be copyrighted.

How can a piece of work be copyrighted?

As I read about this I found out that this is widely misunderstood. No publication or registration is required in the copyright office to secure copyright to original work. There are difinately advantages to register original work. Copyright is secured automatically when the work is created in some kind of form.
